Louisville flu shots here off to slow start

Louisville Public Health Director Adewale Troutman doesn’t want residents lulled into a false sense of security about the upcoming flu season just because last season didn’t turn out to be as bad as had been feared.

“I’m definitely worried” about people letting their guard down, Troutman said after his department announced a communitywide vaccination campaign Thursday. Included are walk-in clinics at firehouses and other locations, and free vaccinations at possibly more than 60 Jefferson County public schools.

Flu Shot Clinics To Begin Across Louisville

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has announced a series of walk-in flu shot clinics throughout the community starting next week.

Many of them will be held at firehouses and the department will also hold its annual Louisville Slugger Field clinic on October 10.

Louisville wins FEMA ice storm appeal

Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government will receive an additional $3.2 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency after winning an appeal related to a claim filed to recoup costs incurred in the wake of a massive ice storm that his Louisville in January 2009.

FEMA initially denied the claim on the basis that it was higher than other communities in Kentucky.

Ky. surgeons perform rare double hand transplant

Kentucky doctors say they have successfully completed a rare double hand transplant at Jewish Hospital Hand Care Center in Louisville.

The doctors, from Kleinert Kutz and Associates and the University of Louisville, started the operation at 7 p.m. Tuesday and finished Wednesday afternoon. They used Twitter to post updates on the 20-hour surgery.

Going green pays off for University of Louisville

Going green is paying off for the University of Louisville. UofL just got a six figure rebate check for reducing its electric bill. Even with our record hot summer, the university was able to cut down on how much it spent on electricity.

In fact, UofL’s electric bill has dropped about a quarter since starting an energy saving project. LG&E rewarded the university with a check for $373,000. UofL is part of the commercial rebate program offered by LG&E. It encourages commercial customers to replace aging, less efficient equipment. For example, UofL put lights in one of its buildings on a sensor and put in new light bulbs. That saved $4,500 on electric costs.

Adam Froman to open as Louisville’s QB

Adam Froman has won a three-way battle to be Louisville’s starting quarterback and will be under center for Charlie Strong’s head coaching debut on Sept. 4 against Kentucky.

Froman, a senior, started seven games for the Cardinals last season after transferring from junior college. He completed 60 percent of his passes for 1,354 yards and six touchdowns with five interceptions.
